A Decade of Impact:
What Your Support Has Made Possible

Amplifying
your Voices
Each year we publish more than 500 original articles, and feature more than 150 different contributors from across the Australian Jewish community and the Jewish world – from emerging writers to established voices who might not otherwise have a platform.

Award-Winning
Journalism
Since 2022 we have won four NSW Premier’s Multicultural Communications Awards, including Ruby Kraner-Tucci’s 2025 Best Report in Multicultural Media for “Generation Change” – a groundbreaking column challenging misconceptions and elevating young Jewish voices.

Engaging the
Next Generation
Through initiatives like “Generation Change,” and “Gen Z” we’ve created platforms for young Jewish Australians to discuss topics often considered taboo – from LGBTQI+ Orthodox identity to disability inclusion.

Ever Growing
Readership
From a few thousand monthly readers in 2015 to more than 50,000 today, TJI now reaches Jewish Australians in every capital city and regional areas, plus readers across the globe.
What Our Community Says
“In times of self-delusion and apprehension, TJI breaks through with truth and clarity. It creates spaces for insight and reason when we need them most. For those of us who sustain ourselves on hope, TJI feeds our souls and minds – but it needs our support to keep that light alive.”
Andrew Jakubowicz
“The Jewish Independent provides a thoughtful, vital voice for the secular Jewish community – especially crucial over the past few years. I’m proud to support its work financially, and I encourage others to do the same. Good journalism doesn’t come for free.”
Karen Mahlab AM
“I’ve read TJI since inception and remain an avid reader. With no advertising, a broad range of Australian and Israeli writers, and varied perspectives on Jewish life, TJI delivers factual information and well-informed opinion that’s highly relevant. Keep up the excellent work.”
Karen Loblay AM
“As a young queer Jewish woman, I don’t always see my questions and voice reflected in community spaces. TJI actually tackles the complex issues our generation is wrestling with – identity, Israel, belonging – without talking down to us or giving simple answers.”
Rachel G.
“I’ve been part of this community for 60 years, and TJI is the first publication that genuinely welcomes different perspectives. Whether I agree with every article or not, I know I’m getting thoughtful journalism that respects my intelligence. That’s worth supporting.”
David B.
“Living outside Melbourne and Sydney, I used to feel disconnected from Jewish conversations. TJI changed that – it’s my window into what’s happening across Australian Jewish life, and it’s accessible no matter where you live.”
Sarah L.
“I’m 28 and the past two years have been difficult. TJI has articulated the cognitive dissonance many young progressive Zionists feel – giving us language for what we’re experiencing.”

Frequently asked questions
Why does TJI need donations?
TJI operates independently without institutional backing, which means we rely on reader support to maintain our editorial freedom. Your donations fund quality journalism, pay contributors fairly, and keep our content free for everyone.
How will my donation be used?
Your support goes directly toward: paying freelance writers and contributors, covering website and technology costs, and ensuring TJI can continue operating independently.
Is my donation tax-deductible?
No. Public interest journalism is not currently eligible for tax deductions in Australia.
Can I donate monthly instead of a one-off gift?
Absolutely! We welcome both one-time donations and ongoing monthly support. Monthly donors help us plan ahead and maintain consistent quality.
What if you don't reach your goal?
Every dollar counts toward sustaining TJI’s work. While we’re aiming for $30,000, any amount raised during this campaign helps secure our future and expand our impact.
How can I stay updated on the campaign?
Follow our progress on this page, subscribe to our newsletter, and follow us on social media for daily updates throughout the campaign.
Do you accept major gifts of $10,000 or more?
Yes! Major gifts are deeply appreciated and allow us to plan strategically for TJI’s future. If you’re considering a gift of $10,000 or more, please contact Executive Director Dashiel Lawrence directly at dash@thejewishindependent.com.au for a personal conversation about your philanthropic goals and the impact your gift could make.
Why are the suggested donation amounts $18, $36, $54, etc.?
These amounts are multiples of “chai” (חי) – the Hebrew word for “life” with a numerical value of 18. Giving in multiples of chai is a Jewish tradition that connects your donation to the celebration of life. While we suggest these amounts, any contribution of any size is deeply appreciated and makes a difference.
Thank You to Our Supporters
For 10 years, you’ve made TJI possible. Whether you’ve read our articles, shared our stories, contributed your writing, or supported us financially – you’ve been part of building something unique in Australian Jewish life.
This campaign isn’t just about raising funds – it’s about celebrating what we’ve built together and investing in what comes next. Every donation, no matter the size, is a vote of confidence in independent Jewish journalism.
