On 29 March 1516 the then-independent Republic of Venice segregated its Jewish population on a tiny polluted island that used to host a foundry (‘getto’ in the local dialect). Dwindling modern community hopes to get a boost from year-long calendar of events that includes US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in a production of Shakespeare’s ‘The Merchant of Venice.’
