A stark reminder of the danger of racism

This appalling act of violence, which targeted the Jewish community on the first day of Hanukkah, has shaken many of us and has caused immense pain, fear, and grief.

Our hearts are with everyone impacted by this terrible attack, with the loved ones of those who were killed, with those who continue to battle for their lives, and especially with the Jewish community.

We recognise the profound trauma such acts inflict, not only on individuals and families, but on entire communities who are made to feel unsafe simply because of who they are.

No one, here in Sydney or anywhere in the world, should have to live in fear of terrorism, violence, or racist hatred.

Every person has the right to safety, dignity, and belonging, regardless of their faith, ethnicity, or background. Acts like this stand in direct opposition to those values we hold dear.

At the Asylum Seekers Centre, we work every day with people who have fled violence, persecution, and hatred in search of safety. This tragedy is a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of extremism and racism, and of the urgent need to continue standing together against all forms of hate.

There is no place for antisemitism, or any form of racism or religious hatred, in our society. We stand firm in our commitment to solidarity, compassion, and justice, and to building a society where everyone can live free from fear.
