Just over a year ago, I stood on a stage in front of 10,000 people at an October 7 remembrance event, alongside fellow young Jewish leaders. At the time, I was a youth movement leader, carrying the responsibility of the role and the collective voice of a generation navigating grief, fear, and uncertainty. Speaking to that audience, I reflected on the resilience of our community, the challenges we faced, and the role young people play in shaping its future.
Since October 7, the impact of war and rising antisemitism has reverberated locally, affecting young people deeply. Youth movements, schools, and student organisations became critical anchors, providing safe spaces, emotional support, and guidance. Madrichim supported their chanichim through presence and consistency, helping young people navigate grief while building resilience that continues to shape our community today.
Young people are not merely participants in our community, they are stakeholders in its future. Each youth movement and organisation brings unique perspectives, but unity across difference enables meaningful action and strengthens our capacity for empathy, collaboration, and leadership.
This week, I stood with my community at the Bondi Vigil in memory of the 15 people killed at the Chanukah by the Sea event. Standing together, it was impossible not to feel the weight of our shared grief, but also the strength of communal solidarity and responsibility. Bondi became a place not only of mourning, but of reflection, resilience, and hope.
More than a year on from that October 7 stage, the values we spoke about then remain as relevant as ever. Solidarity. Resilience. Collective responsibility. Our community continues to grieve, remember, and support one another through ongoing uncertainty.
The future of our community is being shaped by a new generation of leaders carrying this responsibility with care and courage. Now, an alumnus of the youth movement environment, I watch with pride and hope, inspired by the courage of our community to be a light in a field of darkness, confident that through unity and shared purpose, we will not only endure, but thrive.
Stronger together. Always.
