Former Orthodox Jewish youth leader extradited over Bondi sexual assault charge (SMH)
A former Jewish Orthodox youth leader extradited to NSW to face an historic sexual assault charge remains "un-nourished" after going without kosher food while in custody, his barrister has told a court.
Steven Doupe, who represented David Samuel Cyprys during his brief appearance before Central Local Court on Thursday, said his client had also been denied access to a religious text.
Mr Cyprys, 51, was a security guard, locksmith and leader of young people at the Yeshivah Centre and College in the Melbourne suburb of St Kilda East in the 1990s.

In 2013, Cyprys was convicted for raping and sexually abusing nine boys, and was sentenced for eight years, with a minimum five and a half years non-parole. Cyprys has served almost six years in prison.
MANNY WAKS, who was one of Cyprys’s victims, said he welcomed the re-arrest. "Cyprys is one of Australia's most notorious and prolific paedophiles. He has done untold harm to countless individuals - the victims he sexually abused, our families, as well as to his own family, not least his own two children.
"Many of his victims have been dreading his imminent release, so his re-arrest will no doubt be a somewhat comforting development for them.
"I would like to commend this victim for pursuing justice and to encourage anyone else who has been sexually abused by Cyprys to go to the police so that he can be held to full account for his many crimes.
