The study us being run by the Centre for Independent Studies (CIS), an independent think tank with a centre-right orientation.
It will produce publications on antisemitism, online hate, legal protections, and civic education, including a final volume consolidating the three years of research and policy recommendations.
CIS Executive Director Tom Switzer said as a nation built on the principles of freedom and mutual respect, Australia cannot afford to be complacent in the face of rising antisemitism and religious intolerance. “This project, grounded in rigorous research, is a vital step in promoting tolerance. The Centre for Independent Studies is proud to lead this research and contribute practical solutions to one of the most pressing challenges of our time.”
The surveys will define antisemitism broadly, including both overt and coded hostility toward Jewish individuals and institutions, and aligns with international standards such as the IHRA working definition.
Islamophobia will also be examined as a related form of intolerance, with attention to its sociopolitical dimensions and overlap with issues of security and visibility.
The initiative is funded by the Luminis Foundation and philanthropist Simon Mordant.
