The Jewish Independent columnist Elana Sztokman won Best Non-Fiction Jewish book in The Almas.
The Almas, an award created by the website Hey Alma, have announced their choices for the best creative works for the Jewish year 5782.
Top non-fiction award went to When Rabbis Abuse, by Elana Sztokman. Based on 84 interviews, the book uncovers the patterns of abuse by rabbis and Jewish communal leaders.
Sztokman is an Israel-based writer and activist and a regular The Jewish Independent columnist. An excerpt from When Rabbis Abuse was published by Plus 61J Media when the book was published in June.

Best Jewish Fiction: Shmutz by Felicia Berliner
Best Jewish Romance: Funny You Should Ask by Elissa Sussman
Best Jewish Young Adult book: The Last Words We Said by Leah Scheier
Best Jewish Scholarship: In Eve’s Attire: Modesty, Judaism and the Female Body by Delphine Horvilleur.
Best Jewish Movie went to As They Made Us, directed by Mayim Bialik and starring Dustin Hoffman, Candice Bergen and Dianna Agron, which will screen around Australia in the upcoming Jewish International Film Festival.
Television winners included The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem and Kid Sister.
Oras Dezaoradas, Lily Henley’s ode to the Ladino language and Sephardic culture, was named Best Jewish Album.
Alex Edelman was named Best Jewish Comedian, and the best Jewish joke went to an episode from HBO’s The Rehearsal, available in Australia on Binge or Apple TV.
