TJI launches media internship in memory of Andrew Casey

After a five-year partnership with Unions NSW, The Jewish Independent will redirect the focus of its Andrew Casey Memorial Internship, instead offering an in-house program for young Jews interested in digital media.

The internship, spanning two days per week for three months, will provide exposure to the online media landscape by building the candidate's skills in writing, editing, podcasting, social media, and more. It will also offer an opportunity for the selected intern to deepen their commitment to Jewish community building and social justice.

“I know first-hand how valuable hands-on experience is for young media professionals, which is why we have designed the Andrew Casey Memorial Internship program to go beyond theory and act as a launchpad for your career,” said TJI's Deputy Editor Ruby Kraner-Tucci, who personally benefitted from several media internships in her early career. 

“As an intern, you will receive high-level editorial guidance, build your portfolio and develop the essential skills you need for a future in digital media and content creation.”

The internship program is dedicated to the memory of Andrew Casey (1953-2018), a former journalist and long-time activist in the unions movement.

Born in Budapest, Hungary, the eldest son of Holocaust survivors, Casey’s family came to Australia as refugees in the 1950s when he was a young boy. Casey’s ongoing dedication to social justice, inspired by Jewish values, was the motivating factor in his involvement across many causes including protesting for land rights for First Nations people in Australia, building interfaith bridges, supporting refugees and asylum seekers, and connecting Israelis and Palestinians through trade unions.
