Beyond Black and White
Stories of hope, compassion and finding the middle ground.
From the Editor
Sometimes grey is the brightest colour. The Jewish Independent is committed to amplifying the voices of those who see beyond black and white; who hear both the Israeli and Palestinian narratives; who build connections, respect and hope.
The Hamas massacre of 7 October 2023, and the resultant Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, have fuelled growing polarisation even on the other side of the world. In Australia, transplanted tensions challenge the social cohesion of our multicultural society.
In Beyond Black and White, we bring together the perspectives of those who are fighting to maintain the middle ground: the bereaved Israeli and Palestinian fathers who became peace activists; the young Australian woman negotiating the truths of her Jewish father and Lebanese mother; the American academics teaching student journalists to avoid false binaries.
This series is a reminder that hope lies in the shadows, where nothing is black or white.
