Yom Ha’atzmaut 2024 will not be a day of patriotic songs and picnics. Israelis are traumatised after October 7, troubled by the hostage crisis and the war in Gaza, and frightened by the recent attack from Iran.
The country is divided over security, religion and nationalism.
Some Diaspora Jews have responded with fierce loyalty, others are torn between attachment to Israel and sympathy with Palestinians, a few have rejected Israel completely. All feel the heat of an environment where ‘Zionist’ has become a loaded word. To mark Israel’s 76th Independence Day, we asked writers with different perspectives to reflect on how their relationship with Israel has changed in the past six months.
