Australian has seen a shocking growth in antisemitic incidents since October 2023. There were 2,062 anti-Jewish incidents in Australia between October 1, 2023 to  September 30, 2024, quadruple the previous year.

Do these incidents reflect a more widespread change in Australian attitudes to Jews or Israel? The Crossroads25  provides a methodologically sound basis for understanding the attitudes of Australians on a range of questions including traditional antisemitic stereotypes, attitudes to Israel; and  sympathies in the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Comparison with the Crossroads21 survey enables us to detect changes in attitudes over time.

 

Crossroads25 found antisemitism across the broader Australian community is remarkably stable, but there are pockets of deep change. Among young people and among Greens voters in particular there is growing hostility to both Jews and Israel. It also identified widespread ignorance and ambivalence about the October 7 massacre and the Middle East conflict.
