First of three online social justice forums will shine a spotlight on disadvantaged groups who fall through the social security cracks

THIS YEAR’S JEWISH SOCIAL JUSTICE SUMMIT will focus on the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic on those most vulnerable in Australian society and explore paths out of the crisis.

Now in its third year, the Summit - which is sponsored by Stand Up, The Jewish Independent, Launch Pad and Jewish Climate Network – will take the form of three online forums focussing on different aspects of the pandemic.

The “Conversation Series” kicks off on Monday May 11, from 1pm-2pm, with a discussion titled The impacts of Covid-19 on Vulnerable Communities. “Refugees, Indigenous communities and our elderly. Vulnerable communities are being hardest,” say the series organisers. “This conversation will explore how these communities are coping at the moment and what kind of support they (and the organisations that serve them) will need to get through this.”

The forum will include University of Sydney Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Lisa Jackson Pulver AM, and ASRC Founder and CEO Kon Karapanagiotidis OAM in conversation with UNSW Law Lecturer, Melanie Schwartz.

The series continues on May 18 (2pm-3pm) with Leadership in a crisis. “The last several months have been incredibly testing for us all. We have been looking to our leaders to guides us through this mess, and give us hope that we will persevere.

“Leaders in business, government and the non-profit sector have been put under immense pressure recently and this session will explore what that experience has been like and what silver linings have appeared.”

Ronni Kahn AO from Ozharvest, and Josh Burns MP will be in conversation with Gideon Reisner from Stand Up.

The Conversation series finishes on May 25 ( 12pm-1pm), with The World Remade. “Will the COVID-19 experience change the way we live in the future? How? What has the climate movement learned in the last few months that can be applied moving forward? Do we need to restructure economies to avoid financial collapse?

“Will we sustain the sense of community and connectedness that has popped up in so many places?”

Greenpeace Australia CEO Dave Ritter will be in conversation with Danny Almagor OAM and  Rebecca Forgasz, co-founder of Jewish climate Network.
