In August, the US House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform launched a formal investigation into the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit behind Wikipedia, over allegations of foreign interference and co-ordinated manipulation of its content.
The inquiry seeks to determine whether organised groups of editors are engaged in “systematic efforts to advance antisemitic and anti-Israel information”.
Wikipedia’s influence is hard to overstate. The platform underpins much of the internet’s knowledge infrastructure: Google draws from it, Siri cites it, and AI models like ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude are trained on its content. Manipulate Wikipedia, and you manipulate the backbone of information itself.
In October 2024, I revealed a network of more than three dozen editors — dubbed the “Gang of 40” — who have effectively hijacked Israel-related content. This group has made around one million edits across 10,000 articles, reshaping the entire intellectual to paint Israel as a settler-colonial enterprise.
Their most recent — and most striking — victory is the insertion of a sentence into the lead of Wikipedia’s Zionism article that equates the movement of Jewish self-determination with ethnic cleansing:
“Zionists wanted to create a Jewish state in Palestine with as much land, as many Jews, and as few Palestinian Arabs as possible”.
This statement, written in Wikipedia’s authoritative “wikivoice,” is locked in place under a 12-month “moratorium,” a maneuver that has never been used in this context, and prevents any changes to the lead.
