Court rules that allegedly racist and political comments made by Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu are not permitted for a public official, and the Chief Rabbinate must hold a disciplinary trial

Chief Rabbi of Safed Shmuel Eliyahu must be put on disciplinary trial by the Chief Rabbinate the High Court of Justice ruled on Monday, due to racist and political comments he has made in recent years which are prohibited for public officials.

EDITORIAL: A message of incitement (Haaretz)
A senior civil servant who receives his salary from the state and for many years publishes incitement toward various groups – Israeli Arabs, Palestinians, members of the LGBTQ community and others – would have long ago been dismissed, and perhaps even faced criminal charges for incitement to racism.

But the rabbi of the city of Safed, Shmuel Eliyahu, has continued at his post for many years, paid from the public coffers, without having to account to anyone for his actions.
