A program of courses to help Jewish people learn advocacy and campaigning skills for the Uluru Statement from the Heart will launch next week.
The program, titled Voice, Treaty, Truth, introduces participants to the history of the First Nations peoples’ struggle, the Uluru Statement of the Heart and techniques to advocate in an event or campaign.
The courses, to be run by prominent indigenous leader Thomas Mayor, are presented by Emanuel and The Jewish Independent.
They are targeted at six different groups within the community - women, teachers, professionals in Jewish organisations, youth, rabbis and the general community - and will be held once a month. Each course will consist of two Zoom sessions, three hours each.
The first course on February 3 and 7, in conjunction with the National Council for Jewish women Australia targeted at women, will predominantly be run by Louise Togo, an Indigenous colleague of Thomas Mayor.
In chronological order, the other courses are as follows:
Teachers (March 3 and 7)
Professionals (April 7 and 11)
Youth (May 5 and 9)
Rabbis (June 2 and 6)
General Jewish community (July 7 and 11)
At the end of the course, it is envisaged that participants will be able to:
- Understand the history of the First Nations peoples’ struggle
- Explain the Uluru Statement from the Heart and the three key points of the Voice. Treaty. Truth. campaign
- Learn techniques to advocate and campaign on behalf of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander industrial workplace issues
