Australia is considered a dream destination for many in Israel. How do Israelis end up living here and what does it mean to live as an Israeli downunder.
Six months after October 7 2023, The Jewish Independent began the filming of Pita with Vegemite, a 28-minute documentary talking to nine Israeli-Australians about their stories.
Pita with Vegemite premiered at the Jewish International Film Festival in 2024, has screened for limited audiences at TJI events, and excerpts are available on the TJI site but until now, the full documentary has not been widely available.
Now SBS on Demand is streaming Pita with Vegemite: An Israeli-Australian Story as a Special Documentary, making it freely available to Australian audiences.
TJI Editor Deborah Stone said The Jewish Independent was proud to have produced an engaging and important documentary which will expand Australians' understanding of the Israelis who live here.
"There is so much misunderstanding about Israel and that flows through to assumptions and prejudices about Israelis here in Australia. This documentary shows us that Australian-Israelis are a diverse group of individuals building new lives, whether that's by running a restaurant in Sydney or working in high tech in Melbourne or adjusting to the gentler pace of Mullumbimby."
Pita with Vegemite is directed and produced by Sharon Offenberger, Shahar Burla and Mihaal Danzinger and edited by Mihaal Danzinger, with additional editing by Marc Senter. Music is by Shmoné.
