The last local elections that included the Gaza Strip were in 2005 and the 4-year term of those local councils ended seven years ago, in 2009. Hamas refused to participate in 2012 elections, which took place in the West Bank only. Hamas has agreed to run this time, in both Gaza and the West Bank.

In a bid to break the acute polarisation between Hamas and Fatah, Palestinian left-wing groups are running for the upcoming local council elections in a unified list.
