Scomo swaps church for synagogue in Liberal love offensive

BDS attacks on independents, staged public embraces - the government has turned Jewish ‘allegiance’ into an election weapon and cheapened it in doing so

IF SOMEONE ON the other side of the world digested the media coverage of the election campaign these past few weeks, they could be excused for thinking half of Australia is Jewish.

In Wentworth in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, Dave Sharma has reminded everyone how much he loves Israel and has attacked his independent rival Allegra Spender with BDS slurs; in turn Spender spent a lot of time rejecting the BDS link and took out a full-page ad in the Jewish News to assure Jewish readers how much she loves Israel. Media follow-ups spoke to rabbis and community leaders, who gave Spender the thumbs up.

In the seat of Goldstein in Melbourne, the independent candidate Zoe Daniel has been fending off attacks over her signing a Palestine petition during last year’s Gaza conflict and hosing down Nazi comparisons made by her staff. In Kooyong, treasurer Josh Frydenberg’s campaign poster was defaced with antisemitic graffiti.

In the Sydney seat of Warringah, the Liberal candidate Katherine Deves had to apologise after she compared anti-trans activism to opposing the Holocaust.

To cap it off, the front page of the Australian on Easter Saturday featured a huge photo of Scott Morrison, wearing a yarmulkah, hugging Frydenberg, also in a yarmulkah, at a Passover service – in a craven “photo opportunity” conceived by the Liberal Party with the consent of the synagogue.

The image was manufactured not just to help Frydenberg in the battle to retain his seat but also to send a message to the Jewish voters of Wentworth, Macnamara, Goldstein and beyond: the government loves Jews and its leader is “hug-close” to the senior Jewish member of the government. In short, the Libs are the party for the Jews.

The Liberal Party has turned Jews and Israel into an ugly political currency, a weapon to be hurled at opponents.

The photo also brings to mind Morrison’s ham-fisted attempt during the unsuccessful campaign for the Wentworth byelection, in 2018, to move the Australian embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, following Donald Trump’s decision to do so.

There’s something rotten, and getting rottener, in the state of politics. The Liberal Party has turned Jews and Israel into an ugly political currency, a weapon to be hurled at opponents, and a shield for those unleashing the attacks – either in the guise of anti-Israel sentiment or the love of Jews.

It’s an insult to Jews and those who care about Jewish history and life.

The prominence and regularity of stories about Israel, BDS, the Holocaust and Jewish history is completely out of proportion with the number of Jewish voters in Australia, and their influence on voting outcomes.

As former Victorian Labor politician Philip Dalidakis wrote in The Jewish Independent last week: “Jews are a very small minority in Australia and overall their votes don’t count for very much. On the most optimistic assessment, there are perhaps 100,000 voters who identify as Jewish, in a national electorate of 17 million.”

According to the most recent available Census (2016), Wentworth had 12.5% Jewish residents, Macnamara 11.8% (the biggest in Melbourne), Goldstein had 7.8%, while in the treasurer’s seat of Kooyong, the results showed slightly under one per cent.

But there is a more troubling, unstated subtext that emerges out of this political warfare. The intensity and breadth of coverage somehow implies that offending Jewish people, despite their small numbers, matters a lot to politicians because… well, here it comes… they wield an influence way beyond their small numbers. So it’s extra important to woo them and if it’s perceived that you’ve got them offside – then that will redound on your campaign.

That message is probably neither deliberate nor conscious, and I may be the only one who discerns it. Maybe I’m just overanalysing a cheap tactic to gain votes. Perhaps this is just an example of how political campaigns are waged in the age of social media. Either way, it leaves a very bad taste in the mouth.
