Israel’s Declaration of Independence set out three foundational commitments for the Jewish state: mature liberal democracy, fairness for all citizens, and the pursuit of secure peace.
These are not "left" or "right" ideas but core Zionist values. They define the Israel we love and defend. They are also interdependent: corrode one and the others weaken. Strengthen one and the others are reinforced. This is not ideology: it is systems-thinking—and it is borne out by data.
I want to make a sober, data-grounded case that speaking up for democracy ,fairness and peace - is not disloyalty. It is strategy. And it is the only strategy that can keep Israel safe and the Jewish people strong.
Against silence
There are three concerns I hear in every diaspora community, including this one:
- Concern 1: Public criticism shows lack of unity.
Unity does not mean unanimity. It never has. Jewish unity has always meant argument for the sake of heaven and action for the sake of people. Criticism is not betrayal; it’s essential for effective governance. We are one people, not one opinion. Israel and the Jewish people are not weakened because Jews insist on strategy and standards. They are weakened when we replace strategy with shallow slogans and allow drift to become doctrine.

Simone appears to be angry that I criticised her beloved IDF. The fact that the IDF has deliberately murdered medics and then covered it up, has systematically sexually assaulted thousands of children in their custody, wiped out entire families, tortured and raped scores of detainees to death, and created more child amputees than any other conflict in modern history doesn’t appear to have made her question whether it is still appropriate to be “proud of the IDF.”
I can only assume Simone is either deluded and somehow refuses to see the unanimous evidence that her beloved IDF committed these war crimes, or that she does in fact fully support these kind of war crimes because the criminals happen to share her religion.
Simone probably wonders why she has become completely alienated from mainstream Australian thinking.

Just when I feared the Middle East might never recover—that Hamas would dig in, Likud’s extremists would keep frothing, and the whole region would spiral on forever—I stand corrected. Dan, humble commenter and part-time moral scold, has descended to set the record straight. Turns out all we needed was more shouting, certitude, and theatrical righteousness. How could the world’s diplomats have been so blind? One wonders how Netanyahu will even begin to recover from this devastating intervention.
