Why the Hebron shooter trial is dividing Israel

Just as the O.J. Simpson trial exposed the fault lines and racial divisions in American society decades ago, the public reaction to Elor Azaria’s trial and verdict revealed how sharply Israelis are split into deeply divided political and social camps

Israel divided over conviction of Hebron IDF shooter  - Ben Caspit – Al Monitor 04.01.17
The verdict confirms the IDF’s values, the chain of command and the orders for opening fire. On the other hand, everything else remains open, exposed and haemorrhaging. Israeli society is in a very different place from that championed by the panel of judges, led by Col. Maya Heller. The court ruled that Azaria’s comment after shooting the terrorist — 'He deserved to dies — was unacceptable. According to large swaths of Israelis, these comments were, in fact, completely acceptable, while the verdict was unfounded. The outcome of this conflict has yet to be determined.

And see:

5 reasons Israelis were obsessed with the Hebron shooter trial - Heidi Levine – The Forward 04.01.17

Elor Azaria and the army of the periphery - Edo Konrad - +972 Magazine 04.01.17
From the army’s perspective, Azaria’s guilty verdict ostensibly answers the critique that it is unable to deal with soldier violence against Palestinians — or that it doesn’t want to. But there is one reason and one reason only that the lowly soldier was indicted to begin with.

ADL warns against incendiary discourse’ in Israel over soldier's manslaughter verdict - Judy Maltz - Haaretz 06.01.17
In strongly-worded statement the US-based group says 'we harshly condemn the recent incitement against Israeli authorities.'

Elor Azaria and Israel’s moral core
- David Horovitz - The Times of Israel 05.01.17
The subtext of the court’s verdict was that we must not, and will not, allow ourselves to be dragged down to the amoral depths of those who seek to wipe us out
