A week after Israel’s three-day strike on Gaza, which Israel says destroyed the leadership of Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the fallout for Palestinian civilians is only beginning.
Haaretz has detailed the 36 Palestinian civilians killed: 17 by the Israeli attack and 19 by misfired rockets aimed at Israel. Among those killed were 16 children.
A grandmother and her granddaughter, Naama Abu Qaida, 62, and Haneen, 10, were killed while attending the wedding of Naama’s son, Akram.
Abed al-Rahman al-Silak, 19, was killed while walking home from his shoe shop in the Al-Shati refugee camp.
Yasser al-Nabahin, 49, an officer in the Gazan courts and Hamas member, was killed with his three children Dalya, 13, Mohammed, 12, and Ahmad, 9.
Three-year-old Jamil al-Din Nijm was killed with his siblings Jamil Ihab Nijm, 13; Mohammad Nijm, 16; Hamed Nijm, 16; and another teenager Nathmi Karsh, 15.
Doniana al Amour, 22, a promising young artist, was killed at home surrounded by her paintings.
A total of 49 Gazans died and 360 were wounded in the fighting, according to the Gazan health ministry, which does not distinguish between military and civilian casualties. According to unofficial estimates, more than 100 houses were destroyed.
No Israelis were killed due to the effectiveness of the Iron Dome air defence system in countering 950 rockets launched towards Israel. Two IDF soldiers were wounded, and 39 civilians were treated for anxiety or injuries sustained while running to shelters.
