Charles’ paternal grandmother, one of the Righteous among the Nations, is buried in the Church of Mary Magdalene on the Mount of Olives. Sensitivity about the visit stems from the fact that the UK does not recognise East Jerusalem as part of Israel. [Charles’ previous visit, to attend Yitzhak Rabin’s funeral in 1995, was described in some reports as a private visit, as was a 1994 visit by Prince Phillip to his mother’s grave. This translated Haaretz report says Charles' trip to Shimon Peres’ funeral was the first official visit by British royalty to Israel since its establishment in 1948.
