Clashes erupt across East Jerusalem as manhunt continues

Palestinian killed in fighting, Israeli soldier shot guarding settler march.

Hundreds of Palestinians clashed with Israeli security forces across East Jerusalem on Wednesday, with residents in various neighbourhoods burning tires and rubbish bins, and hurling stones and firecrackers at security forces, according to Israel Police.

Officers responded with tear gas and stun grenades, and two were lightly wounded in clashes in Isawiyah, possibly by explosive devices, police said.

The clashes erupted in at least eight neighbourhoods, some of which have remained quiet in recent days. These include Isawiyah, Silwan, A-Tur, Ras al-Amud, the Shuafat refugee camp, Jabel Mukaber, Sur Baher and Beit Hanina.

They were sparked by the hunt for Uday Tamimi, the man who is believed to have  shot and killed 18-year-old Sergeant Noa Lazar at the Shuafat refugee camp on Sunday.

Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked visited the checkpoint in East Jerusalem where Lazar was killed, and announced that she ordered Israel's Population Authority to start checking the option of revoking Tamimi and his family's residency

Earlier on Wednesday, 18-year-old Palestinian Mahmoud Adwai was killed by Israeli military fire in the Al-Aroub refugee camp near Bethlehem, the Palestinian Health Ministry reported.

An Israeli soldier was killed in a shooting near the settlement of Shavei Shomron in the northern West Bank on Tuesday, the military said.

Staff Sergeant Ido Baruch was shot by a gunman who apparently opened fire from a passing vehicle and fled the scene at a high speed, according to the IDF’s initial probe of the shooting.

The attack came as settlers held a march near the adjacent Palestinian town of Sebastia over a string of recent shootings in the West Bank. The soldier was part of a unit securing the march.

The organisers said the march continued as planned following the shooting, which it said occurred several kilometres away.

An armed Palestinian faction calling itself the Lion’s Den claimed responsibility for the shooting in a statement. The group — based in Nablus’s old city — was established in recent months by members of various terror groups. Some of its members were apparently previously affiliated with the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigade and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

The Israeli army closed all entrances to Nablus on Wednesday, limiting entry and exit to only three locations and requiring a security check. The decision to block the entrances was based on the army's assessment that most of those responsible for recent shooting attacks in the West Bank were from the city and fled to it afterwards.

Some of the city's main roads have been blocked with dirt mounds. The army did not confirm how long the blockades would last. Israeli soldiers are stationed outside the city and will only enter if there is concrete evidence that a terror attack is about to take place, according to the IDF.
